It surely would be very useful to have in camera stacking but there are limitations.

My rails cost about $70 + cheap Android tablet (which will also be used for other purposes) and battery (which will also be used for other purposes). In any case, I'm not buying into another expensive camera system right now and even if I did, it probably would not be MFT.

I believe that Magic Lantern will do stacking with some Canon bodies too. If you want to go more than 1:1, step size will matter.

My rails have a minimum step size of 5 microns, thought the positional accuracy is not nearly that good. I don't know what the minimum distance between frames is for Olympus or the others, but I'm pretty sure rails will be better. It will shoot more images in a stack but you have to do the actual processing on a computer. ( note: the lens no longer has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 during close focus, but due to the depth-of-field issue I mentioned above, you really don't want it. Eight images, I believe, for in camera stacking. With the Sigma 150mm Macro, f/2.8 is still unbelievably sharp, so you can shoot wide open without concern for loss of image quality.

The Sigma Macro 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is a high performance macro lens designed for full frame cameras but may also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 225mm with most cameras.

Here is my first attempt to use Focus Shift with the Nikon D850 and then focus stacking with Helicon Focus. If I was doing a lot of stacked macros, I'd be looking at some of the Olympus M43 cameras that do focus bracketing - automatically do the stepping for you - and at least one (the EM1 I believe) will do an in camera focus stack. I'll put up some posts about this sometime. Sadly I haven't had the time to get out and use them yet. As far as I am aware these are field stacks on live insects, probably done in the very early morning while the insects are built my own automated rails - stepper motor and lead screw driven with control via bluetooth from a small Android tablet. Helicon Focus may also be able to do this - I'm not sure.įor some inspiration have a look at some of the stacked images from one of the togs on flicker that I follow. Automated rails can vastly speed up shooting a stack. Zerene Stacker will also control automated rails from Cognisys via USB cable from computer. I've also tried the free Hugin/Enfuse but struggled with it.

I downloaded a trial version and found it pretty good and fairly easy to use. I've been shooting since the '70s but I suppose this still could be an error on my part. You should also have a look at Zerene Stacker.

The only way I've been able to get the images I need is using Helicon Remote in manual mode. I've yet been able to get a sequence of images from point A to point B using Auto with any of the tested lens correction factors. Sometimes it will start at the correct A focus point but only shoot about 75 percent toward the B focus point then stop. Depending on the lens correction factor, symptoms are that the lens will either start shooting way before the A focus point and/or way past the B focus point setting. I've tried various lens correction factors to no avail. I'd like to be able to use the Auto mode in Helicon Remote but have been getting strange results similar to densig's. I'm now using a Canon 6D with a Canon 100mm F2.8 macro lens. Until recently, I've been using a Wemacro rail without issues.
